Chenevaux is in the charming and historic Poitou Charentes region of France, just outside
the villages of St Pierre de Maille and Angles sur l'Anglin, which is officially one of the most beautiful villages in France.
St Pierre de Maille is only a two minute drive and has a restaurant, a cafe, a small supermarket and a maison de pays where you
can buy locally produced specialities and crafts.
The village is on the river Gartempe and has picturesque views along the banks. Angles sur L'Anglin, with it's cafes,
restaurants, another stunning river and the ruined castle is another 'must visit' location!
The picturesque Gartempe and Anglin rivers
are both within a couple of km offering fishing, canoeing,
walking, cycling and picnicking, whilst the beginning
of the Brenne National Park with its wildlife and lakes
is within a five minute drive. The area is a bird watchers
paradise! Pony trekking is available from several places
nearby, and there is horse racing at the spa town of
La Roche Posay during the summer. For golf enthusiasts
there are three good courses (all tested by us and recommended!).
The nearby villages are sleepy and pretty, with lots
of opportunities for pottering around away from the
bustle of the larger towns. Chauvigny, about 20 minutes
away, has a mediaeval centre with five ruined castles
and a weekly market on Saturday mornings, Poitiers (
the nearest airport, a 45 minute journey by car ) with
its churches and the Futuroscope, attracts visitors
from all over Europe. The Loire valley, with its beautiful
chateaux is also within an easy drive.
Chenevaux is an old farm,
with a large farmhouse, a self contained cottage, an
old stables that has been converted into an art studio
and gallery where Mark is now offering art courses,
a huge open barn that is used for shady parking and
another building that houses an old bread oven amongst
other things! A new 10m x 4m swimming pool has glorious
uninterrupted views over fields and open countryside.
The 7 acre garden is being developed and has many fruit
trees, and a 9 tee pitch and putt! The farmhouse and
gite both have enclosed garden areas and the whole site
is predominantly surrounded by oak trees and the neighbouring
farmers fields. Owners Caroline and Mark Judson are
always on hand to help.
